Innovation at the BC Winter Games

The BC Games Society continues to evolve, building off past Games and staying up to date with advancements in sports safety and technology. At the Fort St. John 2020 BC Winter Games, we successfully implemented multiple new initiatives to create a safer sporting experience. The emotional, mental, and physical safety of participants is the BC Games Society‘s top priority and enables young athletes to have the exceptional sport experiences that define the BC Games.

Legacy of the Nanaimo BC Summer Games Continues

As part of the legacy of the Nanaimo 2014 BC Summer Games, the Nanaimo BC Summer Games Award was established in 2015 to award two students who participated in the Games from the Nanaimo area. One male and one female student are chosen annually to receive a $1,000 scholarship, which is paid for by the legacy funds through the Nanaimo Foundation.

Team BC Coach Designs Vacuum-like Chambers for COVID-19 Patient Operating Rooms

Former Team BC coach, Dr. Curt Smecher, has designed negative pressure vestibules to keep staff and patients safe when working with COVID-19 patients. These vacuum-like chambers now guard operating rooms in B.C. hospitals and are being offered to other health-care providers. Dr. Curt Smecher was the Aboriginal Apprentice Coach for Team BC archery at the 2019 Canada Winter Games and works as an anesthesiologist at B.C.’s Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Thank you Dr. Curt Smecher for keeping our community safe.

BC School Sports Scholarship Fund

BC School Sports Scholarships reward excellence in both scholastic and athletic pursuits. The successful applicants will be student-athletes who have balanced their high academic achievements with significant success as school athletes and contributions to their community.

2019-20 scholarship submission deadline is Monday May 4, 2020

BC Athletics is proud to introduce the Front-Line Heroes Award. These awards will be presented to three deserving BC Athletics members (or their immediate family members) who have been working the front lines in health care and/or essential services.

Nominate a deserving community member by May 17, 2020.
